Freaks Biography The ever-evolving and never predictable musical venture that is Freaks first materialized as the brainchild of London-based Luke Solomon and Bournemouth’s Justin Harris. Having followed the same DJ gigging route in the early nineties, Luke and Justin’s similar musical outlook and sense of humour meant that a collaboration in the studio was almost inevitable. It wasn’t long after that the imprint Music for Freaks was born and they began to release a series of four 12 inches each with a collectable sleeve highlighting the importance of unique artwork and style to the Freaks vision. Freaks’ first album ‘The Beat Diaries’ followed, on which they shared writing duties with Joey Negro. Freaks went on to produce two more albums on the Music for Freaks imprint; ‘Meanwhile Back at the Disco’ and ‘The Man Who Lived Underground.’ From these albums, records such as ‘Turning Orange’, ‘The Creeps’ and ‘Where Were You When the Lights Went Out’ emerged as seminal tracks in the Freaks catalogue with a sound that spanned everything from disco, house to techno. Music For Freaks, as the label, (linked to Luke’s other label, Classic Recordings) went from strength to strength with Luke & Justin a&ring other artists onto the imprint and releasing projects from Doc L Junior, Kenny Hawkes plus many more. Through their albums, singles and remixes for other artists such as Pulp, Damon Albarn, Kasabian and Chicken Lips, Freaks have also garnered support from a wide selection of DJ’s / producers and electronic artists including respect from fellow label mate Derrick Carter, Laurent Garnier, Damian Lazarus, The Chemical Brothers, Arthur Baker, Ashley Beedle, Ewan Pearson, X-Press 2. Throughout the years and the music, they have built a faithful and obsessive fanbase ! Their huge selling underground record, ‘The Creeps’ then began to re-appear in a new form. Remixed by Vandalism and using the original bassline as the key hook, the record was re-ignited in the clubs again. Luke, Justin and Stella then re-worked it further by adding a new post-punk style vocal and renaming it ‘The Creeps – Get on the Dancefloor.’ The record was released by Ministry Of Sound and became an instant classic with Radio 1 playlisting it 7 weeks upfront before it went on to reach number nine in the UK charts, was synced to major tv ads and became a major hit around the world. Freaks recent single releases, “Right Now” featuring the vocal talents of Robert Owens and “Conscious Of My Conscience” featuring Diz aka 012 have found themselves released via Rebirth Records and the team up with this creatively open minded label looks set to continue whilst Music For Freaks continues to release albums showcasing the guys musical history. The Freaks – ‘Best of Times’ compilation which included tracks from all three studio albums as well as previously unreleased material, received major press acclaim in 2010 : “This Album is proof just how influential this duo’s heavily electronic, slightly off kilter take on deep house has been – half of berlin is trying to make music like this now !” – IDJ MAG “Containing all the highlights of their first 3 albums, Best Of Times also boasts some incredible new tunes which prove that Freaks are still some of the most unique producers in house” – DJ MAG The next album up on MFF is a collection of the best of Freaks remixes. Titled “Danced & Re-ordered”, it features reworkings of all the classic Freaks tracks from some giants of house, to include Tiefschwarz, Rob Mello, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter. Alongside the album, the summer of 2011 will see a major re-release of “Where Were You When The Lights Went Out” via News Records in Belgium, who are currently in process of remixing it for 2011.
